Common Buying Mistakes (And the Cheap Way to Avoid Each One)

Every mistake below is drawn from our research's owner evidence — the 'wish they had known' list — not from theory. Each costs hundreds to thousands to learn late, and almost nothing to avoid early.

The list

  1. Shopping appearance-first. Guides repeatedly redirect buyers to weight, storage and cleaning first. Fix: run the order in the First-time buyer's guide.
  2. Treating listed weight as the weight. It may exclude the head, conflate gross/net, or describe a different weight-reduction version. Fix: How to read specifications.
  3. Skipping the lift test. Weight is the #1 ownership regret. Fix: rehearse with equivalent dead weight.
  4. Buying wire fingers unknowingly. The most-named specific defect. Fix: finger type in writing before paying.
  5. Assuming photographed options are included. Implanted hair, body painting and even the pictured material can be paid extras; clothing in photos is explicitly not included in retailer FAQs. Fix: configured price, itemized.
  6. Reading the guarantee badge, not the policy. Free-cancel windows can be 12 hours; damage deadlines 24–48 hours. Fix: Return and cancellation policies.
  7. Assuming 'free shipping' means no duties. DDP status decides. Fix: DDP in writing — Domestic vs international shipping.
  8. Planning storage after delivery. Lying flat deforms; standing storage damages feet. Fix: Safe storage and handling before ordering.
  9. Paying an unverified seller by transfer. The counterfeit mechanism depends on irreversible payment. Fix: the six-step check in How to verify a legitimate seller.
  10. Using the doll before inspecting it. Use can void your damage claim. Fix: the arrival ritual in How to inspect a delivered product.

The meta-mistake

Assuming any single guide — including this one — settles it. Cross-check the claim that matters most to your purchase against its primary source (the seller's policy text, the manufacturer's chart) before money moves.

How this guide was written

From the seller and manufacturer listings behind our catalog records, retailer policy pages and owner accounts we reviewed, checked 13 Oct 2026. Where a fact could not be checked, the guide says so rather than filling the gap. See our methodology, editorial policy and who we are. Spotted an error? Tell us.
