Total Cost of Ownership: The First-Year Budget Beyond the Price
Short answer: on a $2,300 premium doll, plan for about $2,600–$3,200 in the first year. That's before any import duty, and up to about $3,500 if you pay duty yourself. The extra goes on storage, care supplies, clothing that fits and a repair contingency. Every line below is labelled as either a price we saw or an estimate. Change any of them in the True Cost Calculator.
This guide is about the ownership budget. For what drives the purchase price itself (material, configuration, seller type), see How much does a doll really cost?.
Step 1: the doll price, from real observations
The table under this guide lists every full-body model with a seller price we've seen, lowest first, with the seller and the date. At the time of writing, those prices span about $1,600 to $2,700. Configuration options such as implanted hair, a different head or an upgraded skeleton add to the base price. Get the configured total itemized before you pay.
Step 2: the first-year basket
| Line | First year | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Doll, configured | $2,300 in the worked example | Within the range of prices seen in our catalog |
| Stand, hanging hardware or storage case | $150–$400 | Estimate. In owner accounts this is effectively essential for a full-size doll |
| Cleaning, powder and drying supplies | $60–$150 | Estimate |
| Water-based lubricant (ongoing) | $30–$80 | Estimate |
| Clothing that fits doll proportions | $50–$200 | Estimate. Regular sizes often don't fit |
| Repair kit and adhesive contingency | $30–$100 | Estimate |
| Subtotal, before duty | $2,620–$3,230 | Sum of the lines above |
| Duty and fees, if the seller isn't duties-paid | About $100–$300 on a $2,000 purchase | A third-party estimate written before the 2025–26 tariff changes. Treat it as a floor |
| Total if you pay duty | up to about $3,530 |
Not included: a replacement wig (around $20) or implanted hair as an upfront option (seen at €427–471 on one European listing), financing costs, and replacement parts after the first year.
Step 3: duties, which changed in 2025
US Customs ended duty-free treatment for low-value imports from all countries on 29 August 2025 (CBP CSMS #66065494). The suspension still stands. A full-size doll was always above the old $800 threshold, so the bigger change is for accessories and parts bought separately from abroad, which now carry duty too.
Ask every seller whether the price is delivered duty paid (DDP). Background is in Domestic vs international shipping. We publish no duty rate, because rates depend on classification and origin and have changed repeatedly.
Step 4: financing, if you use it
Buy-now-pay-later and financing add a cost that no seller page we reviewed explains. If you finance, add the provider's total cost of credit, taken from its own terms, to the table. Check the statement descriptor too: Discreet delivery.
Cost per year: why we show a method, not a number
Cost per year means dividing by lifespan, and published lifespans conflict:
- TPE: guides quote 1–3 years at one end and 5–8 years at the other.
- Silicone: guides quote 3–7 years at one end and 10+ years at the other.
No real-world lifespan data exists, so a single cost-per-year figure would be false precision. Use this method instead:
Cost per year = (first-year total + expected repairs) ÷ the lifespan you believe, stated honestly.
For example, $3,000 over 3 years is $1,000 a year, and over 8 years it is $375 a year. The difference comes almost entirely from care and storage, which you control. See Silicone vs TPE and Maintenance and care.
The time cost
One owner put cleaning at about 45 minutes per session. That's a single report, not a measurement. Add storage handling, and for many owners time is the cost that decides whether they're satisfied. If that figure gives you pause, a lighter model or a torso reduces both the time and the physical effort: see Lightweight vs full-size.
